The Rhythm Travellers live at The Soft Rock Cafe, Liscard

I am in a few bands at the moment, playing different instruments in each. This is a picture of my main cover band The Rhythm Travellers bringing the funk at The Soft Rock Cafe in Liscard last Wednesday night.

There are usually five of us, but the drummer is on holiday and the keys player was grabbing a drink when this picture was taken.

The picture was taken by Geoff Ponter, who not only hosts the Wednesday nights at Soft Rock while taking brilliant pictures of the performers, but also plays guitar for The Lo Tones. Thanks for the picture Geoff!

And the day, was saved.

After watching an episode of Celebrity Pointless, I have never been more convinced that the word ‘Celebrity’ has devolved to simply mean ‘Noun’.

It’s such a shame that a typically educational television show has been dumbed right down to lower the bar for the empty headed ‘Nouns’ they have scraped together from numerous empty barrels around the country. They honestly just had a round wherein the contestants had to recognise types of hat.

I should start by explaining that I have never had much luck with releasing a record of my own. Every time I have enough material to put one out, I get caught up in other business, lose interest and usually just wind up throwing most of my work online for free.

While this has earned me a modest online following (all of whom are fantastic by the way), it isn’t helping me reach my personal goal of releasing an actual record any time soon. I keep just making individual tracks instead of a solid package of songs, which is something that I want to do.

I thoroughly enjoy uploading my music and allowing people to hear it for free. Hell, it’s how I discover new artists these days so it’s only right that I give something back, right?

So here’s where this thus far uninteresting blog post gets interesting.

I was approached recently by a thoroughly pleasant chap who happens to be the director of a small record label. He decided to establish contact with me after he had seen me play around my home town and heard some of my uploaded recordings. We exchanged contact details and met up a few days later.

The two of us have had a long chat about a whole lot of things; my music, my friend’s music, his work, the current state of the industry, production/gear choices and so on. He informed me that not only would he like to employ my services as a session musician/producer, but also that he is rather eager to for me to release a record through his label as a solo artist.

As of yet, I haven’t signed anything as rushing in to this sort of thing can prove dreadfully unwise later down the line. As it stands, we have met, exchanged views and promised to meet again in a few days to further discuss matters.

He is a remarkably down to Earth individual who seems genuinely excited to work with me musically. I am more than happy to admit that I am interested in releasing a new record through his label at some point. I made one thing crystal clear while we were discussing a potential future release:

I made sure that if I did agree to release music through this label, I would still be permitted to create and freely upload recordings, both originals and covers to the internet without having to seek the label’s blessing beforehand. I should point out that he was entirely fine with it. A lot of record label types would have argued with that, as releasing anything for free is not in their best interest financially, but he totally saw my point of view and agreed that it is more than fair.

The way I see it, I should still be able to reward the loyalty of my followers with free music, especially if it isn’t related to the record released through the label. Let’s be honest, it’s the way I am discovered by 90% of my followers.

I know a lot of you will be wondering why I am even bothering with a label when I could just release it myself. After all, I am going to write, perform, produce, record, mix and master this hypothetical record by myself, so why not just release it myself too?

Well, While I am fairly well versed in releasing a record, I have little to no idea when it comes to releasing a record properly. Sure, I could produce the tracks and make some decent cover art easily enough, but if I wanted anyone to hear it, I would also have to pay out of my own pocket to get copies made, figure out how to sell my music online (Both physical copies and downloadable copies), be my own manager and promoter, etc.

It’s just not realistic and it would be foolish of me to believe that I alone could do all of this to a professional level. Also, I started this whole post off by explaining that I have tried and failed in the past, mostly due to my own sense of apathy towards my self worth.

The proposed plan is a 5 track EP made up of entirely new material that I am yet to write, although I am toying with the idea of adding a few bonus tracks that are remixes or acoustic versions of my previously released recordings, however it’s the earliest of days for this project.

So this has essentially been my recent metaphorical kick up the arse. I have label interest. They are willing to fund, release and promote my original music. I plan on locking myself away for a while to try and test ideas. Hopefully, the people who enjoy the free music that I have uploaded to the internet enjoy it enough to entertain the idea of buying a CD of entirely unheard songs. Physical copies would be made, although downloadable editions would also be made available online.

My girlfriend is the best.

Even after giving me THREE mega birthday gifts BEFORE midnight, she said she was worried she hadn’t got me enough. What a hero.

I only needed two Ms. Marvel TPBs to complete my collection of that particular saga and they both happen to be the hardest ones to get a hold of. She went and bought me one of them! Turns out that the one she bought me is one of the most significant TPBs too, as it contains major turning points in the plot etc. WINNER.

As well as that, she got me the new Spider-Man film AND the newest animated Resident Evil film on DVD too.

After we went to see the new Spider-Man movie, I ranted on for ages (probably boring her to a near comatose state, even if she DOES love Marvel) with reasons why it was so much better than the last three Spidey films. She takes note of the silly things that make me ramble. We both adore Marvel comics, so we will definitely be watching that in the morning (It’s 2AM here in the UK).

She also took note of the fact that I hold a strong affinity for the Resident Evil franchise, especially the releases that feature Leon S. Kennedy as he is just a legend.

In summary, I AM A RATHER HAPPY CHAPPY AND ADORE MY GIRLFRIEND MIT GANZEM HERZEN.

Instead of doing nothing today, why not teach yourself how to play Ukulele? You can pick one up relatively cheap online, or from most high street music shops.

Playing a musical instrument has apparently been shown to improve a person’s IQ by as much as 5 points.

Why not give it a go? I bet you’d be great at it.

When you get to a decent level, you could teach someone else how to play and continue the cycle. Just think of all of the potential music and happiness you could cause by giving it a go now. It would be magnificent.

Also, you know that one guy you absolutely can’t stand? They told me they that they don’t think you can do it. Screw that loser, try it out! Everything you need to know is right up there.

Standard ukulele tuning is G-C-E-A. See? You’re already learning and bettering yourself. Keep it up!
